Vitamin B1, thiamin helps prevent complications in the nervous system, brain, muscles, heart, stomach, and intestines. It is also involved in the flow of electrolytes into and out of muscle and nerve cells.

Vitamin B2, riboflavin is one of eight B vitamins that are essential for human health. It can be found in grains, plants, and dairy products. It is crucial for breaking down food components, absorbing other nutrients, and maintaining tissues.

Vitamin B3, Niacin is a vitamin that acts as an antioxidant and plays a role in cell signaling and DNA repair. Helps to lower cholesterol. Niacin is essential for the body to convert carbohydrates, fat and alcohol into energy. It helps maintain skin health and supports the nervous and digestive systems.

Vitamin B5, Pantothenic acid metabolizes carbohydrates, proteins, fats and alcohol as well as produces red blood cells and steroid hormones.

Vitamin B6, Pyridoxine decreases homocysteine levels that have been associated with Alzheimer’s disease and memory impairments. Pyridoxine is needed for protein and carbohydrate metabolism, the formation of red blood cells and certain brain chemicals. Easy Healing Soup

This easy healing soup can be used for anything, whether you’re trying to eat less and lose weight, recover from the cold or flu, or if you’re just feeling tired or stressed. Have a cup before meals to warm up your digestion.

Bring to a quick boil and call it a day.
Bring to a quick boil and you’re done.

If you can boil water, you can make this soup. Its even a common starter in Asian restaurants. Its just cabbage, onions, sea salt and water. If you need an extra boost, throw in some grated ginger. Today I used Brussels sprouts because they were organic and available at my local Trader Joes. Brussels sprouts are just baby cabbages grown on a stem.

They have many vitamins including B6, magnesium, iron and potassium. Onions are great for immune boosting and contain sulfur compounds, zinc, selenium, and vitamin C.

The main benefit for your health is the prebiotic fiber that replenishes your gut biome. Prebiotic fiber is what feeds your probiotic gut environment.

Just thinly chop your cabbage or Brussels sprouts with the onion and bring to a boil to soften, but not long enough for the green color to fade. Its quick to prepare. Toss in some sea salt to taste. This is a great basic. You can always add ginger, green onion, and any other veggies if you have time.

Its Paleo, Plant Paradox, Lectin Free, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Vegan, Vegetarian, AIP, and Weight loss friendly.

Enjoy!

Micro Needling by Desiree Merulli
Microneedling by Desiree Merulli

As a acupuncturist specializing in holistic rejuvenation and wellness, I am excited to offer a new service to help my patients feel their best. Microneedling is one of the earlier forms of acupuncture. The 7 Star Hammer or Plum Blossom Needle was used since ancient times for healing, rejuvenation and even hair loss.

Dermal pens are a modern version of these tools. I use a medical grade, professional use only pen for my patients. This pen penetrates the skin to the ideal depth to create collagen induction and tighten and lift the skin.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling Therapy also called Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), and Percutaneous (through the skin) Collagen Induction (PCI), is a minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation procedure that involves the use of the Microneedle Pen.

The mechanical action of the pen allows the needles to puncture the skin and create a controlled injury at a specific depth. Each puncture creates a channel that triggers the body’s natural healing process to fill these micro wounds by producing new collagen and elastin in the papillary dermis. In addition, new capillaries are formed for improved blood supply.

With Microneedling, the top layer of the skin is parted without being damaged, leaving the skin intact. It does not “burn” your skin like peels or more invasive lasers. The needle penetration depth can be adjusted from 0.25mm to 2.50mm into the skin depending on the area of the body and the skin condition being treated. Using skin needling consistently will trigger the body’s repair process until the desired level of skin rejuvenation is achieved.

Microneedling results in the production of new collagen and elastin, improvement in skin tone and texture, firmness as well as reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks.

How Is Professional Microneedling Different Than At Home Treatments?

The mechanism of action differs between the professional grade devices and home devices. The professional device, AcuMicro, uses a vertical action at 18,000rpm, versus a rolling action or vibrating action that can cause excess damage to the skin.

Microneedling Combined With Plant Stem Cell Serums

Microneedling can be used in combination with Hyaluronic Acid and other serums to hydrate and heal the skin.  Plant stem cell serums are available and may be added on to your treatment to address specific issues such as dark circles, pigmentation, and sagging skin.

The micro-channels created by the needles allow for deeper penetration of topical serums for more effective results. This procedure can increase the skin’s ability to utilize the nutrients by up to 3,000 %.

What Is Nano Needling?

Both the Nano and microneedling treatments use a pen like device that oscillates a tip up and down to stimulate a skin reaction. They both induce cell turnover, serum infusion and provoke the healing process that results in skin transformation.

Nano needling on the other hand works a little different. It does use the same type of oscillating motion to treat the skin but the cartridge encompasses 81 silicone tips. Nanoneedling does not puncture the skin and is used in specific cases, or in the more sensitive eye areas to help significantly reduce fine lines and wrinkles with each treatment.

These microscopic hair-like cones separate the cells within the epidermis to allow active products to be pushed into the skin. Nano needling only affects the epidermis, treating within the upper .15 mm of the skin. The benefits of this serum infusion treatment include pigmentation reduction, increased cell turnover, skin rejuvenation and an immediate glow with no downtime. This treatment can be done weekly to exfoliate the skin.

What Can Microneedling Treat?

  • Acne Scars
  • Fins Lines & Moderate Wrinkles
  • Pore Size
  • Texture
  • Tone
  • Scars
  • Photo Aging & Sun Damage
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Hypopigmentation
  • Hiar Loss
  • Dry Skin

What is included with each session?

With every session, medical grade hyaluronic serum is applied to your skin to increase hydration and skin healing. I also include a numbing cream soothing facial mask.

You may upgrade your treatment with Plant stem cell serums to address specific concerns such as under eye discoloration and bags, pigmentation imbalances, & skin sagging for additional fee.

Can I Have Microneedling If I’ve Had Cosmetic Surgery, Botox Or Injectable Fillers?

Yes.  Microneedling helps to speed healing and stimulates your natural collagen production and cell metabolism.  We will work together to optimize your results and other procedures.

In General:

Botox: I recommend waiting 2 weeks after Botox before microneedling on the face.

Cosmetic Fillers: The cosmetic-type injectable fillers take about 14-28 days to integrate into your skin’s collagen structure.

Cosmetic Surgery: If you are having a surgical procedure, I recommend non-cosmetic acupuncture treatments before and after your surgery, as this will increase your body’s healing mechanisms.  Acupuncture before surgery will boost your immunity, and acupuncture post surgery will help speed your recovery while reducing swelling and bruising.

Do I Need To Take Time Off Work?

The treatments don’t require any downtime, however you will be red for 24 hours.  If you are planning a special occasion, I recommend completing your sessions 2-4 weeks ahead of your event.  For individuals who are on blood thinners or bruise easily, Arnica gel/cream and pellets can help minimize bruising.  Limiting sugar, processed foods and alcohol before and during treatment will lower inflammation systemically while reducing any chances of bruising.

You will be given a sheet with aftercare instructions.

Dry Skin Brushing For Immune Health

Dry Brushing

It is well known that the skin is the largest organ in the body, and is responsible for one-fourth of the body’s detoxification each day, also making it one of the most important elimination organs. Toxicity can gather beneath the skin’s surface from such common influences such as improper pH levels in soaps, skin creams, antiperspirants, and foods.  Plus synthetic fibers worn next to the skin with any of them may contribute to a variety of skin problems and conditions.

When you do dry skin brushing, you help your lymph system to clean itself of the toxins that collect in the lymph glands. You use a simple technique to improve the surface circulation on the skin and keep the pores of the skin open, encouraging your body’s discharge of metabolic wastes, resulting in an improved ability to combat bacteria, while helping your skin to look and feel healthier and more resilient.  Skin brushing is a perfect self-care treatment.  You may use either a body brush or spa gloves. For best results, always wash the brush or gloves after each use. This is an excellent treatment to do right before an epsom salt bath.

Benefits:

  • Tightens skin
  • Helps digestion
  • Reduces cellulite
  • Stimulates circulation
  • Increases cell renewal
  • Cleans lymphatic system
  • Removes dead skin layers
  • Strengthens immune system

How to dry skin brush:

  • Begin with your feet and brush vigorously in circular motions.
  • Continue brushing up your legs.
  • Proceed to your hands and arms.
  • Brush your entire back and abdomen area, shoulders and neck.
  • Use circular counter-clockwise strokes on the abdomen.
  • Lightly brush the breasts, avoiding the nipples.
  • Brush upwards on the back and down from the neck. Better yet, have a friend, spouse or family member brush your back.

10 Tips for Winter Blues

We’ve all been there before. Struggling to get out of bed, feeling lethargic and unmotivated. Here are some tips I’ve recommended to my patients over the years.

Image Copyright : dolgachov
  1. Create movement. Run. Dance. Treadmill. Walk up and down the stairs in your building. Even some light stretching or yoga at home will help clear out stagnation in your system. The physical and emotional body are interwoven. You may have noticed when you are really upset or really happy how it effects how your body feels. The principle holds true for changing your mood or mindset by moving your body.
  2. Go outside. Being outside in nature will lift your mood even if its yucky out. Look upward toward the sky and roll your shoulders back to a comfortable posture, rolling your hands/ thumbs outward. You’ll change the alignment of your body to a more open relaxed state-a much needed reprieve from the hunched forward texting pose.
  3. Eat well. Choosing leafy greens will provide nutrients and also cleanse stagnation. The bitterness of the greens improves digestion and will provide clean nutrition without a heavy feeling.
  4. Listen to vigorous uplifting music. Feel free to move or jump while listening. Avoid dismal sounding music.
  5. Treat yourself. Self care is crucial. This includes getting extra sleep if you need it.
  6. Brighten up your environment. Make sure you have adequate lighting at home and work, especially when the days are shorter. While natural sunlight is better, any light will stimulate your brain’s photoreceptors. If you are lying in bed, trying to find the motivation to get up, you can place your cell phone over your forehead/eyebrows (third eye center/Ajna chakra) and use that forbidden blue light that keeps us awake at night to help wake us up in the morning.
  7. Have a glass of water. An Ayurvedic hack to help someone feel better is to give them a glass of water. This works well whether its irritability or depression. We are all a little dehydrated and its easy to forget to drink water in the colder months. Water helps us recenter. You may also add just a pinch of sea salt to your water to help with electrolyte balance. Check with your physician first if you were told to avoid salt for any reason.
  8. Help others. Taking a moment to focus on something outside yourself will lighten your mood. Hold open doors for others, smile (see tip #9 if this bugs you), let people in during heavy traffic, send a note to someone.
  9. Smile. This is contraversial for some as being told to smile and be nice isn’t always in your best interest. In this case though, I am suggesting you smile for yourself first. There is a neurological connection between your facial expression and your mood. Smiling makes you feel and look better too.
  10. Come in for a tune-up. Acupuncture can lift your mood and boost your metabolism.

11 Anxiety Tips

As we transition into the Fall and Winter season, I am reminded of how many people suffer from anxiety. Whether its from social pressures or the natural darker weather months, here are my top 11 anxiety tips:

Anxiety can be treated with acupuncture.
You Don’t Need To Suffer From Anxiety. Image ©  lassedesignen

  1. Take a time-out.  This little hack shouldn’t be limited to kids.  Stepping back from a stressful situation or person will give you some perspective and allow you to think and respond more clearly.
  2. Set boundaries.  This goes for your time commitments, activities, friendships, work and health.   Establishing boundaries is a form of self-respect and self-care.
  3. Eat nutritional meals on schedule with your body’s needs.  Keep healthy snacks like nuts and avocados around for a quick fuel source when you’re under pressure.
  4. Limit stimulants such as alcohol and caffeine, which can aggravate anxiety.
  5. Get proper sleep. Most people are sleep deprived. Try a calming Valerian or chamomile tea a few hours before bedtime.  Melatonin supplements can be helpful if you start with a lose dose and increase as needed.  Always ask your healthcare provider first about supplements and interactions with your current medications and health conditions.
  6. Take a warm bath.  Water can be very grounding for most people.
  7. Exercise.  Find a type of movement that is fun. Dance, walk, yoga, even walking around the block or up the stairs at work will help you rebalance.
  8. Take deep breaths.  Focus on exhaling out longer than you inhale.  This will help calm and reset your nervous system.
  9. Do the best you can and be kind to yourself.
  10. Go outside. Even If the weather is gloomy, the fresh air will help rebalance your mood and move out stagnant energy.
  11. Get Acupuncture. In a recent study, acupuncture outperformed drug for anxiety treatment.
