Receiving acupuncture regularly improves your mental focus and outlook. How Does Acupuncture Feel?

Acupuncture needles are flexible and very fine with a diameter about the size of a human hair.  They are very different than the hollow needles used for injections.  In fact they are so small that about twenty can fit into one hypodermic needle.  The needles may produce a slight sensation or you may not feel them at all.  Once in place, you may feel a pleasant sensation of warmth, numbness, tingling or heaviness.  This is your own bioelectric current moving through your body.

Depending on the individual and the treatment goals, needles are left in place for 10-30 minutes while you rest comfortably.  The treatment rooms are comfortable and equipped with heated tables, relaxing music and soft sheets.

Most of my patients find acupuncture very calming and relaxing and often fall into a restful sleep during treatments.

What is the course of treatment? How Long Does It Take To See Results?

The time it takes to see results depends on the condition we are treating and and how long you’ve had it.  During the course of treatment you can expect to have more energy and sleep better while your symptoms of imbalance improve.

An initial course of treatment is 10 sessions.  Typically, most conditions show improvement around the 6th session.  Acute conditions resolve quickly, while chronic conditions take longer.  Several factors including your general health, lifestyle, and diet influence results.

The effects of treatments are cumulative.  Acupuncture treats the root of the problem, therefore a series of treatments is required to resolve your condition.  At the start of your treatment, its best to schedule your sessions close together, 1-3 times per week, then reduce the frequency as you improve.  This allows for the most effective results in the shortest time possible.  Once your health is restored and symptoms minimized, you will receive a customized maintenance program with lifestyle recommendations and less frequent visits.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is a complete system of medicine that has prevented and treated illness for over 3000 years.

In a nutshell, your body is comprised of a network of complex bioelectric circuits called meridians. Qi is the traditional term to describe the electrical current that travels along meridians.

Specific points along the meridians are stimulated to balance the current, treating pain, illness and dysfunction.  All living things including plants, animals, water and air have electrical current.  Maintaining smooth current throughout your body is essential not only for treating pain and illness but also for improving your well being.
