What is acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture is a specialized surgical procedure that has prevented and treated illness for over 3000 years.
Your body is comprised of a network of complex bioelectric circuits called meridians. Qi is the traditional term to describe the electrical current that travels along meridians. Specific points along the meridians are stimulated to balance the current, treating pain, illness and dysfunction. All living things including plants, animals, water and air have electrical current. Maintaining smooth current throughout your body is essential not only for treating pain and illness but also for improving your total well being.
What can you expect during treatment? How long does it take?
During the course of treatment you can expect to have more energy and sleep better while your symptoms of imbalance improve.
A course of treatment is 10 sessions. Typically, most conditions show improvement around the 6th session. Acute conditions resolve quickly, while chronic conditions take longer. Several factors including your general health, lifestyle, and diet influence results.
The effects of treatments are cumulative. Since acupuncture treats the root of the problem, not just the symptoms, a series of treatments is recommended to resolve your condition. At the start of your treatment, its best to schedule your sessions close together, 1-3 times per week, then reduce the frequency as you improve. This allows for the most effective results in the shortest time possible. Once your health is restored and symptoms minimized, you will receive a customized maintenance program with less frequent visits and lifestyle recommendations.
Receiving acupuncture regularly improves mental focus and wellbeing.

How does acupuncture feel? Do the needles hurt?
Most of my patients find acupuncture very calming and relaxing and often fall into a restful sleep during treatments.
Acupuncture needles are flexible and very fine with a diameter about the size of a dog whisker. Acupuncture needles bear no resemblance to the hollow needles used for injections. Approximately twenty acupuncture needles can fit into one hypodermic needle. Upon insertion, the needles may produce a slight pinch or no sensation at all. Once the needle is in place, you may feel a pleasant sensation of warmth, numbness, tingling or heaviness. This is your own bioelectric current moving through your body. Depending on the individual and the treatment goals, needles are left in place for 10-30 minutes while you rest comfortably.
